Sinus Surgery: Can It Cure Sinus Pain?

Every year, thousands of sinus surgeries are performed. Initially, many people belief it’s the perfect solution to all of their painful sinus troubles. While there is a lot of truth to this belief, it’s not always the way things play out in real life.

What Are Sinuses?

Sinuses are just spaces found within the skull. They’re lined with tissue, also called mucosa, which humidifies, warm and purifies air that we breathe in.

The sinuses are always producing fluid, and the fluid is important because it provides essential purification and prevents infection. There are small passages that connect the sinuses. The three major sinuses are sphenoid, ethmoid and maxillary.

Do You Need Sinus Surgery?

If you think you might need sinus surgery, there are some simple signs that you can watch for. Thick drainage that originates from the nose is one of the symptoms. Do you experience frequent sinus pain and headaches?

Blockages in your sinuses can cause pressure and pain. In many cases, the pain can be so bad that it feels like a toothache. If you feel like you’re suffering repeated sinus infections, then you could need the surgery.

How Sinus Surgery Works and Expectations

The main purpose of the surgery is to eliminate obstructive and disease sinus tissue. The end result is improved natural sinus drainage. What many people don’t realize is that post-operative care is of the same importance as the actual surgery.

Before undergoing the surgery, it’s also important to consider the potential complications and risks. For example, there is always the chance that the original sinus problem for which the surgery was performed can return. As with all surgeries, there is always the risk of serious infection.

Some other potential problems are loss of smell, loss of taste and damage to the skull. A typical sinus surgery can take several hours. If you decide to proceed with the surgery, it’s important to bring a relative or friend because you probably won’t be able to drive after surgery.

Does It Really Cure The Pain?

Unfortunately, many individuals have undergone surgery on their sinuses and still have trouble with the original problem. This is actually far more common than you might think.

If you do proceed with the surgery and find the results to be less than satisfactory, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck with faulty sinuses forever. There are countless reasons why people undergo the surgery and don’t seem to get relief from the pain.

The reality is that some people just have very difficult to correct sinuses. However, statistics show that the majority of individuals who undergo the surgery experience satisfactory relief from sinus pain.

Individuals who don’t get relief the first time around might require additional surgeries. With that said, there is no doubt that sinus surgery can cure the pain caused by blockages in the sinuses.
